Common Ailments

Worried your cough might be turning into something more serious? Not sure how to treat a pulled muscle? Here are some tips on dealing with common types of illness and injury. Follow each link to learn more.

  • Acute Bronchitis: An inflammation of the airways, acute bronchitis causes difficulty breathing and coughing.
  • Allergies: An allergy is when your body overreacts to allergens or substances that don't cause problems for most people.
  • Asthma: A disease of the respiratory system, asthma is chiefly characterized by a cough or difficulty breathing, often accompanied by a wheezing or whistling sound during exhalation.
  • Common Cold: The common cold is a contagious viral infection of the head and chest.
  • Gastroenteritis: When you have symptoms of nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, it could be caused by viruses, bacteria or a variety of other medical conditions.
  • Head Injury: Head injury can occur from motor vehicle accidents, falls, sports, and fighting or other violent injury.
  • Influenza: Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness caused by a virus.
  • Laryngitis: Usually a common accompaniment of a cold or sore throat, or after-effect of strenuous yelling.
  • Mononucleosis: Infectious mononucleosis is a viral infection that affects lymph nodes.
  • Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis): Conjunctivitis, commonly known as "pink eye," is an inflammation of the membrane covering the eye and lining the inner surface of the eyelid.
  • Sinus Infection: Pain is caused when the mucous lining of the sinuses becomes inflamed.
  • Sore Throat:  A sore throat may result from a number of causes.
  • Strains and Sprains: Strains and sprains require rest, ice, compression, and elevation to heal.
  • Travelers’ Diarrhea: Each year, Travelers’ Diarrhea (TD) affects between 20-50% of international travelers, an estimated 10 million persons.
  • Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): A urinary tract infection is caused by bacteria—usually from the rectum or genital area including the vagina—invading the urethra and bladder.
  • Vaginal Infections: Any interference with the delicate balance of vaginal secretions sets up an environment conducive to infection.
  • Wound Care: It’s important to take proper care of wounds for prompt healing and to prevent infection.
