Allergy Injection Policy
The Student Health Center (SHC) will administer allergy injections during the regular academic year with written orders and the appropriate serum from your allergist. If you want the SHC to administer your allergy injections, first drop off your serum and instructions at the front desk and pick up a copy of the Allergy Injection Policy to read and sign. We will keep your serum refrigerated here. Alternatively, your allergist may want to mail your serum and instructions directly to the SHC. You will need to read and sign the Allergy Injection Policy prior to receiving your first injection here. To schedule an allergy injection appointment, call our main number 289-8064. Please schedule your first appointment at least 24 hours after we receive your serum so the nurse may review your instructions. (Your initial allergy shot/shots must be administered by your allergist's office and cannot be administered by SHC.)
Allergy Shot Protocol
There is always a possibility of an adverse reaction to an allergy shot. Our allergy shot protocol requires:- A physician is present in the SHC.
- You wait for 30 minutes in the SHC and are checked by a nurse for signs of a reaction before leaving.
- No rubbing or scratching of the injection site. If itching occurs, apply ice.
- You avoid vigorous exercise (jogging, gym workouts, etc.) one hour before and after injections.
- You immediately report any problems/reactions from an allergy injection to the SHC.
Patient Responsibilities
- Keep current instructions, injection schedules and serum(s) at the SHC.
- Adhere to the injection schedule prescribed by your allergist.
- Arrange to receive scheduled injections during semester breaks and summer break when the SHC is closed.
- Obtain refill serum(s) as needed.
- Pick up remaining serum(s) when leaving the University for semester breaks, withdrawal or graduation. Any remaining serum will be discarded each May after graduation.
Allergy Injection Appointment Requirements
- Appointments must be made at least 24 hours in advance.
- If you are more than five minutes late for the scheduled appointment, you may be asked to wait or reschedule.
- Missing three scheduled appointments results in revocation of allergy clinic privileges and referral to an off-campus medical provider, with no exceptions.
Billing and Payment Requirements
- The charge per visit is $15 for a single injection and $20 for multiple injections.
- Charges are billed through the Student Accounts Office at the end of each semester.
- The SHC provides the appropriate medical receipt for reimbursement purposes.
- The SHC does not file any insurance claims.
