Lab Testing Services

Most lab tests ordered by physicians may be collected at the Student Health Center (SHC). Some tests may be performed in-house at the SHC, including rapid strep A testing to diagnose strep throat, finger-stick blood glucose, urinalysis, and urine pregnancy tests. Lab work that cannot be performed in-house is collected at the SHC and sent for testing to Bon Secours Health Partners Regional Laboratory in Richmond, Virginia. This lab work is processed by Bon Secours Health Partners Laboratories, 5801 Bremo Road, Richmond, VA 23226, Phone (804) 281-8100, Fax (804) 282-8604, Tax ID# 54-1417686. Check with your insurance company in advance to be certain they will provide reimbursement under this arrangement. Otherwise, you must go to HealthPartners or another area laboratory so the lab can file directly with your insurance carrier.

Prior to sending out any specimens for testing, the student will be informed of the SHC policy and given an opportunity to discuss with his/her parent/guardian.

A written order from a student’s private physician is required for all lab work performed by the SHC. This order must include the test(s) requested with appropriate CPT codes and the ordering physician’s phone number, fax number and a business address. No exceptions. Once the SHC has received the order, the student will be contacted to schedule an appointment. Lab test results will be faxed directly to the ordering physician by Health Partners Regional Laboratory. Charges will be handled according to the SHC policy.

If the student chooses to have the SHC provide lab services, he/she will be charged at the time of service. Payment must be by check, by Spider Card, or charges applied to the Student Account. The SHC does not bill insurance companies or any other third party payer. The superbill/encounter form with appropriate codes (referred to as ICD9 and CPT codes) and applicable charges, which is the information requested by the insurance company, will be provided at the time of service. However, to ensure that testing is covered, it is critical to understand your insurance coverage. The student will be given a copy of the superbill/encounter form.
